Anne Marie Szucs - Abstract Artist
My Work
Most of my abstract painting is intuitive where images and ideas emerge as I work. I like to mix things up as well, especially with landscape abstracts, where I am sometimes more intentional and start with a direction for my piece. Working predominantly with acrylic open paint, my tools of choice are palette knives, squeegees, and other mark-making tools. I also love to work in series - allowing ideas and paint to flow over several substrates at once. I almost always work in layers, adding and subtracting details, until the final painting emerges.

Growth

Growth brings together many of the images and themes in my recent work: exploration of nature, connection of energy between different elements, and layers of experience.
Growth is 24" X 36" (depth of 1.5") on canvas. Acrylic. $600 CAD.
These three works, Everything, Everywhere, and All at Once, are, yes, inspired by the movie of the same name! I'm playing with the many levels and interconnectivity of life. We can always choose kindness and love - not matter what universe we are in.
All three are 16" X 16" (depth of 1.5") on canvas. Acrylic. $390 CAD each.

In these two works, Buttercup and Nestled, I first added many layers of colours and textures and then sanded back down to show early line and colour work. Ghost-like images started to appear that I wanted to highlight, so I came back in with glazing and some opaque touches to focus the eye and finish the two pieces.
Both are 20" X 16" (depth of 1.5") on birch panel. Acrylic. $400 CAD each.

I have always loved integrating charcoal into my acrylic works, but this was the first time that I have used collage as well. Mountains tend to show up in my work a great deal - likely because I live so close to the beautiful Rocky Mountains in Alberta. These pieces speak to my love of travel - so many directions to travel in. But I always love to come home!
Home and Away

Home
Away
Both pieces are 36x24 on 1.5" canvas. Acrylic. $600 CAD each.
In the last couple of years, circles and swoops have started to show up in my work. I love the flow and energy of connection they bring out. These two pieces also speak to my love of travel and adventure with my contentment and peace upon returning home. (I am also a big fan of Toronto Blue Jays baseball - so there is a little homage to that in the titles!).

My art residency time at the Chateau d'Orquevaux, France, was full of creative exploration. I started each piece with free charcoal sketches as their jumping-off point. Many natural elements found a place in these works, and I continued my work with many layers. Movement, colour, and energy dominate these works.
